Lithospheric thinning beneath the Tengchong volcanic field, Southern China: Insight from Cenozoic calc-alkaline basalts

چکیده

The Tengchong Cenozoic volcanic field lies in SE margin of the Tibetan Plateau. basalts exhibit evident spatial-temporal variations, but consensus on their meaning has not been reached yet. In this study, we collected from western, central and eastern areas measured whole-rock olivine major trace elements basalts. remarkable chemical isotopic diversity, showing a strong correlation with eruption locations ages. Specifically, western (formed at 7.2–2.8 Ma) are characterized by high 87 Sr/ 86 Sr low 3 He/ 4 He ratios, while those area 0.6–0.02 feature ratios. Based temperature- pressure-dependent elemental partition coefficients, phenomenon is interpreted as mainly caused difference lithospheric thickness among these areas. On one hand, estimated primary magmas show higher SiO 2 , Na O, (La/Sm) N Hf/Lu Ba/Zr ratios than area. other Ni contents phenocrysts As different amounts extension result degrees decompression asthenosphere, finally influencing compositional variation magmas, results indicate that lithosphere thicker addition, erupted older area, suggesting thinning. We propose due to slab rollback may have according deformation modes crust mantle, our study supports mantle-crust decoupling south ∼26°N

Lithospheric thinning beneath rifted regions of Southern California.

The stretching and break-up of tectonic plates by rifting control the evolution of continents and oceans, but the processes by which lithosphere deforms and accommodates strain during rifting remain enigmatic. Using scattering of teleseismic shear waves beneath rifted zones and adjacent areas in Southern California, we resolve the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary and lithospheric thickness va...

Significance of hornblende in calc-alkaline andesites and basalts

Hornblende occurs in some andesitic and basaltic rocks of calc-alkaline affini1y, where it is commonly associated with olivine. The texture, eruption history, and composition are interpreted to indicate that hornblende commonly forms as a product of reaction between olivine and basaltic and andesitic liquids. The natural hornblendes probably formed within the crust at temperatures between 960o ...

Distribution and geochemical variations among paleogene volcanic rocks from the north-central Lut block, eastern Iran

The Lut block in eastern Iran is a micro-continental block within the convergent orogen between the Arabian, Eurasian and Indian plates. Large areas of the north-central, eastern, and western Lut block are covered by volcanic rocks of Paleogene, Neogene and Quaternary age.  Peak volcanic activity took place in the north-central part of the Lut block during the Eocene, and then dramatically decr...

Nature and evolution of the lithospheric mantle beneath the passive margin of East Oman: evidence from mantle xenoliths sampled by Cenozoic alkaline lavas

24 25 Cenozoic alkaline lavas from the Al Ashkharah area, facing the Indian ocean along 26 the North-East Oman coastline, contain numerous small (‹ 2cm) mantle xenoliths. 27 They provide a unique opportunity to investigate the nature and evolution of the 28 upper mantle beneath the Oman passive margin, bordering the Owen Basin. All 29 studied xenoliths are porphyroclastic to equigranular spinel...
